Why Taking Time for Yourself Makes You a Better Mom (Even If It Feels Hard)
Katie Henry, FIT4MOM Frederick
I still remember one of the first times I left my baby to do something just for me.
I was driving down the road, passing Green Meadows Farm on my way to meet friends for the afternoon and I started crying.
I had been so excited for a little kid-free time. But in that moment, all I felt was heaviness, guilt, and anxiety.
What if something happened to me while I was gone? What if something happened to him?
At the time, I didn’t realize how common these feelings are in the postpartum season. So many moms experience waves of anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and guilt as they adjust to this new identity and the deep love that comes with it.
I took a few deep breaths, kept driving, and showed up anyway.
And almost instantly, just being in the presence of my friends, something shifted. My shoulders softened and my mind quieted. That afternoon I laughed, had real adult conversations, and for the first time in a while, I felt like me again.
Over time, I started to notice something important...
Those small pockets of time for myself weren’t selfish, they were essential.
Did the mom guilt magically disappear? Nope.
In fact, I felt it again just two weeks ago when I booked myself a facial. That little voice crept in...Should I really be spending this time (and money) on myself?
But this time, I had something I didn’t have before: perspective.
Over my ten years (what?!) of motherhood, I’ve experienced what happens when I do take that time. I know I leave feeling lighter, more patient, more present. I come back not just as “mom,” but as a fuller version of myself, and that version of me shows up better for my family.
So let me say this clearly, because I know so many moms need to hear it:
Those feelings of guilt, anxiety, or even selfishness? They are incredibly common, but they are not something you have to accept as your normal.
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to prove your worth before taking a break.
And you don’t have to carry guilt for taking care of yourself.
Like anything, it gets easier with practice.
Start small.
A 5-minute walk by yourself.
A 10-minute phone call with a friend you miss.
A quiet cup of coffee without interruption.
Then, as it begins to feel more natural, look for ways to step out and truly fill your cup.
This is exactly why we offer monthly moms-only events at FIT4MOM Frederick—because you deserve time that is just yours.
Time to connect, laugh, breathe, and remember who you are outside of motherhood. Time to be surrounded by a village that gets it.
Will there still be moments of guilt when you put it on the calendar or kiss your little one goodbye? Maybe.
But will you come back feeling more like yourself, more grounded, more connected, more energized? Absolutely.
And that matters. Not just for you—but for your whole family.
From one mom to another, start small and know you are always welcome in our FIT4MOM Frederick village.
xoxo,
Katie, mom of two boys, 10 + 6 💙
